Diary of Jeffa P. Hill, Jr. - March 16, 1944 - Part II (The Wedding)

Continuing with Grandaddy's diary entry from March 16, 1944:

Well, we decided to be married in October. A few days later we decided to change it to the last week of September. My cousin Dorothy in Houston, Tex was getting married the first of October and we were going down there on our honeymoon. On August 24 [Grandaddy's birthday] they gave me the best birthday (22) I've had in many a year. I couldn't help from shedding a tear. My darling gave me a beautiful watch. The last part of August Sgt. Shouffle told me that something was cooking and that we had better get married right away, so we set the date as Sept. 4th, 1943. I got Hotel reservations and train tickets to New Orleans for our honeymoon. On Saturday, Sept. 4th our wedding day, at noon I received orders to report to New York City at once. It really upset our plans but we went ahead just the same. It was a beautiful wedding. It will live always in my heart. The church was dark except for a row of candles on each side of the altar and one each on the piano and organ. We had quite a few of our friends there. Juanita was dressed in a dark blue suit, a cute black hat with a veil, blue gloves, an orchid corsage, and was carrying a white Bible with a spray of white flowers. I was wearing the regular Army summer uniform. Lt. Winchester was my best man and [he left a blank] was the maid of honor. I remember after the ceremony I tried to lift the veil so I could kiss Juanita and I couldn't so I kissed her right through it. But I don't think anyone noticed it. After leaving the church we went down to the house and were congratulated by Juanita's kin folk who were there. Then we went out to a supper of fried chicken on Rainbow Drive and then out to the Officer's Club where we were welcomed by everyone and by Russ Carlylse playing the Wedding March.
